Please note, the following emergency treatments are based on personal experience and provided for information purposes only, always consult your doctor prior to using any alternative or complimentary methods of treatment.

The Quickest way I found to relieve gout attacks;

Take the medication your doctor prescribed for treating your gout. If you don’t have prescribed medication for your gout use an over-the-counter NSAID such as Ibuprofen .

Recommended dosage for treating acute gout attacks.

Ibuprofen,(OTC), take 800 mg 4 times a day

Reduce the dosage as the attack subsides.

See your doctor or visit a hospital as soon as possible for an injection of steroid or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), to quickly relieve the pain.

Remove the shoes, socks, or tight clothing from the attack area and avoid any stress or pressure on them.

Apply an anesthetic numbing spray, cream or lotion to the affected area, which will help to numb the pain, (such products can be purchased easily over the counter from any chemist, drug store).

Avoid using aspirin as it will worsen the attack.

Avoid alcohol, acidic foods and drinks, fizzy drinks, orange juice, tomatoes, citrus fruit, red meat as they will all worsen and prolong gout attacks.

Try to consume at least 2 liters of mineral or filtered water every day.

You need to alkalize your body and increase it’s blood PH level to around 7, the quickest way I have found of doing this is by the use of ordinary baking soda (nothing special here, just the backing powder you probably already have in your kitchen cupboard). Mix half a teaspoon of baking soda to a medium, half pint sized glass of mineral or filtered water and drink every four hours (do not exceed more than four glasses in one day). Baking soda, is known to accelerate the urinary excretion of excess uric acid and will remove the build up of the uric acid crystals from around the affected joint. Baking soda, due to its acid level, increases the effectiveness of NSAIDs. Please note, due to the high sodium content of the backing soda, avoid using any other forms of salt while using baking soda due to its high sodium content. Using backing soda is not advisable for people who suffer with high blood pressure, or heart conditions.

Remember to get your doctor’s approval before trying this.

Use ice to cool the swelling and pain. Gently rub the ice over the effected area for around 10 minutes.

Rest joint until gout is completely gone, premature use of the affected joint may prolong or bring back the attack.

Find out all you can about your gout condition so you will be able to prevent and treat future attacks in a sustainable way, use the right approach and you may never have to worry about having another attack. Be prepared, gout usually starts with little or no warning. This quick remedy is designed to address an acute and unforeseen attack and while very effective is not the best way of treating and preventing gout in the long term. Stop using this method when your attack is over and find a sustainable method of relief.

Lap Band Surgery: How Does it Work?

Lap band surgery is a procedure aimed to promote weight loss for people struggling to cope with obesity. Overall, the lap band surgery is a simple procedure where, in short, a small implant is placed around the top portion of the stomach to form a ‘gastric pouch’. Here’s how it works:

A ‘gastric band’ with a small balloon inside is attached around the top portion of your stomach, forming a smaller ‘gastric pouch’. The placement of the band creates a small pouch at the top of the stomach that holds up to approximately 30 ml, which works out to about 1/8 cup. You are inclined to eat less because the pouch holds less food than the whole stomach. As the upper part of the stomach registers itself as being full, it sends a message to the brain saying that the entire stomach is full. This is the main principle behind the lap band procedure; this tightening of the stomach feeling or sensation helps the person to:

1. be hungry less often 2. to eat smaller portions 3. and lose weight over time.

This pouch is filled with a saline solution or a Radiopaque isotonic solution which is injected into the band via a port. Via the port, the surgeon has control over the amount of saline solution that is inserted into the band. When fluid is injected, the lap band expands and places pressure around the outside of the stomach. This causes a decrease in the size of the passage between the pouch and the lower stomach; restricting the movement of food.

The gastric band is adjusted or inflated via a small port inserted just under the surface of the skin. When adjusting the lap band (same as gastric band) a specialized needle must be used as to avoid causing any damage to the port or the port membrane. These ports come is many different styles and designs and may be placed based on the surgeon’s recommendations.

Once the procedure is done, (usually takes about 45 minutes) the next stage is the post operative follow-up adjustments, support, and lifestyle changes. The patient will need to visit their doctor every few weeks in order to receive their saline injections. Over this time the band is filled to the point where the patient feels they’ve hit a ’sweet spot’ where optimal restriction has been achieved. This is just based on personal preference and each person will be different.

Interestingly enough, the entire lap band operation is fully reversible! The lap band surgery is the ONLY weight loss surgery that is reversible. That’s because gastric band placement, unlike other procedures like malabsorptive weight loss surgery (an example would be Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery), doesn’t cut or remove any part of the stomach or the digestive system. It’s usually easy to remove the band and reverse the surgery, requiring only a laparoscopic procedure, after which point the stomach should return back to its normal pre-banded state.

So that’s how the entire lap-band procedure works, but we still haven’t touched upon post-surgery support, diet plans, proper nutrition, healthy lifestyle, the list goes on and on, so be sure to keep coming back to Lap Band Blog as we continue to examine the new weight loss surgery craze that is the the lap band surgery.

How To Deal With Fat Loss

Carbohydrates make up less than 10 percent, and in some cases, less than 5 percent of the daily calorie intake. Carbohydrates are the fuel for fat cells. By eating unlimited quantities of eggs, steak, cheese, and other foods that are low in carbohydrates, we can starve ourselves of fat fuel. Carbohydrates only make a contribution to fat storage if you consume an excess of calories over requirements. Even if a part of carbohydrate is stored as fat, that fat is still available for burning as fat fuel and will not contribute to weight gain if your energy intake and expenditure is balanced.

Carbohydrates are the most efficient fuel for your body during strenuous exercise. Get most of your extra energy from foods like starchy vegetables(such as pumpkins, potatoes, corn and etc,) and whole grain or enriched( bread, cereal, rice, or pasta). Carbohydrates are converted to glucose in the body and insulin helps cells utilize glucose for energy. Insulin is a key hormone in the maintenance of blood sugar, eating more carbohydrates does not mean insulin will increase. Carbohydrate makes your blood glucose level go up. If you know how much carbohydrate you’ve eaten, you have a good idea what your blood glucose level is going to do.

It has been proven that carbohydrates and insulin do not make you fat. Carbohydrates with a low GI value is slow to release sugar into the blood, which gives or curbs your cravings and provides a stable supply of energy. In addition to weight loss, the diet believe to reduce cholesterol and help treat diabetes and other diseases. Carbohydrates and proteins yield four calories per gram, and fats yield about nine calories.

To control the hormone response to foods has a stable effect on serotonin levels. This helps prevent excessive eating emotionally and increase the feeling of peacefulness and well-being. Calories taken in, have to equal the calories out for maintenance. When we cut out food groups as in we cut calories weight loss thus occurs.Calorie counting do not work because you need to “shift” calories — not count them. Our diet is scientifically designed to make the scale drop more each day via “shifting calories”.

Avoid losing weight too fast or very quickly. Lose weight too quickly and your body will burn off muscle rather than fat therefore making it harder and harder to keep weight off and stay motivated. Slowly and steadily is the best way to get in shape and stay there permanently. Weight loss occurs since most of the calories and nutrients are routed into the colon where they are not absorbed. This surgery procedure is less often used because of the high risk for nutritional deficiencies. Weight problems often run in families, may be overeating to comfort yourself when you are sad, stressed or lonely. Sometimes a low metabolism (the rate at which you burn the calories you eat) or a problem with hormone levels may be the cause. Weight loss, more energy, and life-long health are just a download away.

Why You Should Consider Homemade Dog Food

American dogs, like American people, are gaining more and more excess weight. They may live contentedly with their owners, but a lot of dogs are less active than they should be and eat less appropriate diets than dogs did only 10 to 20 years ago. We see more illness, more vet bills and dogs with much shorter life spans as well. Some dog owners have started their pets on diets that are tailored to meet their pet’s special dietary needs. First, the owner must research what the ideal food is for meals, snacks and treats.

Once they have collected enough dog information, the owner can guarantee that his/her beloved pet is getting the nutrition it needs. Some dog owners have started to use their own dog information to help them make their own food and treats for their dog. This has to be done very carefully, since learning how to make your own dog food can actually hurt your dog if you do not make it correctly. Your dog may not be able to digest certain meats or fats, for instance.

There are also companies that will make all natural dog food for you. These companies have done all the research and know your dog information including what vitamins and minerals your dog needs to survive and thrive. They also know what foods can make your dog sick. Some companies, like the one that makes flint river ranch dog food, make their food to be human grade. This means that a person could eat it without fear of illness.

A variety of human grade canine treats can be found on store shelves. There are specific shops which will create these delicacies in an oven, in much the same way baked goods are made for humans. Some of these shops even invite you to bring your animal in to determine which of the items they prefer. Whatever food you decide to give your dog, remember you research it so that you are giving your dog the best possible life. Every dog needs enough water, rest and exercise in order to stay healthy. Don’t forget that we are supposed to be our dog’s best friends, and we need to make the right decisions for them.

Many people feed their dogs special diets after they determine what foods their dogs need to eat, both for regular meals and for special treats. This dog information allows them to be sure that they are feeding their dogs the food that they need to stay healthy and strong for a long time to come. Some companies, such as flint river ranch dog food, make human grade dog food, which means a person can enjoy eating it too. If you want to make your own dog food at home, you must do your dog research and learn what your pet should and should not eat.

Bleeding Gums Can Warn of periodontal disease treatment

Filed Under (Health) by Petra on 04-09-2008

When we are kids we focus on the dentist and the hygienist as giving advice on how to avoid tooth decay. Later as adults we realize that everything in the mouth is connected and related so all of the brushing and flossing advice over the years can help prevent periodontal disease treatment as well. Kids don’t like the drill and the chair, but have a very high tolerance for the minor annoying periodontal disease treatment problem. A little bleeding and sensitivity don’t bother them much and the problems can often go untreated.

The most common periodontal disease treatment is gingivitis and most people are familiar with the term from television advertisements for dental products. Gingivitis gets the name from the gingival tissue of the gum that surrounds the bottom of the teeth in the mouth. If people practice poor oral health and allow plaque to stay on their teeth, it can feed an explosion of bacteria under the gums at the base of the teeth.

If the bleeding persists past a couple of days, it may show the presence of periodontal disease treatment types other than gingivitis. If the bleeding worsens and the inflammation continues the disease may be periodontitis instead of gingivitis. Periodontitis is the strong uncle of gingivitis and not a disease to fool around with or ignore.

The extra bacteria usually like to hang out near the base of the tooth and under the gum. periodontal disease treatment often starts in this protected and hard to clean area of the mouth. The tissues around the bacteria party get irritated and swell with a color change towards the angry red side of the spectrum. The swelling will have some bleeding associated with it as well.

Gingivitis is a minor periodontal disease treatment in most cases but can be a warning sign of bad health habits and can lead to more advanced diseases. One of the more destructive diseases that can start with gingivitis is periodontitis. While gingivitis is relatively calm and painless, periodontitis is not either.

There are other periodontal disease treatment problems that can be seen first as bleeding gums. It is possible for a virus such as herpes to get inside the mouth and cause bleeding. The disease will form small sores on the gums in various areas of the mouth and seriously irritate the tissue. The bleeding will not stop until the virus is destroyed.

Some causes of bleeding gums other than periodontal disease treatment are leukemia and diabetes. Diabetes has the tendency to affect many parts of the body adversely, but the gums are an early target for problems. Bleeding gums may be a sign of undiagnosed diabetes that has just manifested first there. If it is diabetes then it will foster the growth of other gum disorders soon.

Leukemia is not really related to periodontal disease treatment at all, but causes serious problems in the blood of the patient. The blood has reduced abilities to thicken and clot if the body has leukemia present. Bleeding gums are one possible clue to the underlying disease. There are several tests to track down the actual cause of bleeding gums, but many doctors will stop at gum problems first before thinking in other directions.
