Converting DVD to AVI files has several advantages. They are single files that can conveniently store an entire movie in one place on your hard drive that takes up less space than a typical DVD file while still maintaining decent quality picture and sound. They are typically stored using a DivX or Xvid codec by a backup program.

They are the most common file that movies are stored in on computers. So common, in fact, that many DVD players can actually play them now, so you can backup DVDs to your computer, then burn them again to a DVD-Recordable disk and play them on your TV (if you have the right software).

A great software program that can do all this is the Movavi videosuite. It can burn, edit, and copy videos, amongst many other things. It is used by people personally to backup their own DVD collections and also by professionals who edit and publish their own video.

Several simple steps is all it takes to convert your DVD to an Avi file on your computer:

1. Run the Videosuite, click the DVD button and Add DVD. This will allow you to backup everything on the DVD. Choose the correct IFO or VOB files that you wish to copy.

2. Select an audio track for the DVD you want to convert (get the correct language…)

3. Choose the output format for the movie. You will probably want that to be AVI in DivX or Xvid format.

4. Select the place on your hard drive to save the movie after conversion.

5. Click ‘convert’ to start reading from the DVD and saving to your computer.

You can use this method to store many DVDs on one disk if you like. DVDs are converted down to as little as 1/4 or 1/5 their original size but still maintain good quality, so you can reburn 4 or 5 movies to a single DVD-R disc and store more movies on less disks.

Of course, only backup movies that you own the legal right to. Pay for your movies if you want to watch them.

The newest addition to the Rockband franchise has been released to eagerly awaiting fans…but does it deliver?

Rockband 2, developed by Harmonix Music Systems, is the newest release to the highly-acclaimed Rockband franchise. The sequel was released for the XBOX 360 on September 14th, and is scheduled to be released for both the Playstation 2 & 3 and Wii later this year.

Anything new to Rockband 2?

Harmonix has not altered the basic game from the original Rockband, but they have added several new features and songs in an attempt to provide a new gaming experience for veteran Rockband players.

Rockband 2’s main attraction is undoubtedly its new song repertoire. 84 new songs await players to unlock and rock out to, including a Guns N’ Roses song from their unreleased album, as well as a list of songs that players can download. Harmonix has also made it possible to import and play songs from the original game by choosing the ‘Export Songs’ option in the original Rockband’s menu.

The sequel brings some slight changes to the gameplay, including new game modes and slight modifications to the instruments.

The ‘No Fail’ mode is a new addition to the game, allowing a song to be played without the threat of failing. Even though the mode is only available in Quickplay (so you can’t progress in the actual game in the mode), it still provides a nice respite for those wishing to play more casually, such as in a party setting or those with small children.

Rockband 2 also brings changes to the Tour mode, most notably that any number of players can start a band and begin touring. The game, unlike its predecessor, require a band leader, allowing players to switch instruments throughout the tour.

Harmonix doesn’t seek to revolutionize any gaming conventions with this latest release. This sequel is simply a continuation of an already proven game genre, providing players with new songs, modified gameplay, increased difficulty, and new modes. The game itself is a fun addition to the Rockband franchise, and should provide lots of enjoyable gameplay for seasoned fans and new players alike.
