Traditional Christmas Stories are a Timeless Gift

Amidst the piles of Christmas decorations, I suddenly land upon the most treasured tradition of them all. “The Book”, as it is now known to all in our family, brings an immediate smile to my face. Joy, laughter and love fills my heart as the timeless memories of these favored stories flood my mind.

This family tradition began when I was only 8-years old and continued well into my teens. My mother would call us into the family room.fireplace litlights aglow on the Christmas treepeace and quiet spreading throughout our house as we snuggled under the weight of the family quilt. It was then that my sister and I would anxiously anticipate the opening words; the beginning of a treasured tale from our most prized collection of beloved Christmas stories.

This tradition is perhaps the most loved by everyone in our family. Season after Season, we would bring out the “most loved book”. Season after Season the stories became more rich with meaning.

Even when I had grown into a teenager, I still loved it when my mother brought out the much-loved Christmas book. It filled me with a great sense of joy and connection. As I matured, the stories grew richer as my own understanding of their meaning expanded. Steeped in tradition, knowledge, morals and values, the stories gave me new insight about life, love, family and spirituality. As I began experiencing my own personal hopes, dreams and desires, the stories took on a new layer of significance. It happened slowly, but one Christmas, I realized that as I had grown, the stories had grown with me. Now buried deep within my soul their masterfully crafted sentences had become deeply significant. As a young girl I simply loved the magic of the stories; as a young woman, I could more readily relate to the wonder and struggle the characters encountered.

I am grateful to my mother for understanding that children never outgrow the love of hearing a story read aloud. As she infused the passages with passion and meaning, my sister and I strengthen our resolve to train our own voices to speak with conviction and clarity.

It’s another Christmas Season. I hold the book close to my heart. Softly, the Spirit of Christmas has been awaked. I am filled with anticipation. A smile arises. I’ve read these stories for over 30 years and I can’t wait to read them again this year. These memories are the best gift my mother could have ever given me.

Christian Book Reviews

This is part of a 13 part series I have covered from what I believe are some of the best and instrumental books in the Christian market. The following books are from our miscellaneous category.

“Your Best Life Now” by Joel Osteen

This book has become a national bestseller. This man truly flows with knowledge and revelation from the Lord and you cannot go wrong with any of his solid biblical teachings. He has one of the biggest churches in America.

I know some have criticized him as being too seeker-sensitive in some of his sermons, but I believe this man is truly anointed by the Lord and this book will give you much practical, down-to-earth knowledge and wisdom on how to get the most out of your life in the Lord with what He is calling you to do for Him.

“God’s Generals: Why They Succeeded” by Roberts Liardon

For those of you who would like to learn about some of the saints in the past who have walked with higher levels of the anointing such as Smith Wigglesworth, Kathryn Kuhlmann, Aimee Semple Mcpherson and Marie Woodworth-Etter - this book will give you all of the basic fact of their ministries, how they all got started and some of the incredible things that had occurred in their ministries for the Lord.

This book contains stories about how they journeyed with God and how they learned how to walk with some of the highest levels of the anointing. Aside from their successes in their respective ministries, their failures are also sources of lessons to learn from. This is the only book I know that goes into very good basic detail into all of these people’s lives.

“The Holy Spirit” by Billy Graham

One of the greatest evangelists of all time has come up with a solid book on the Holy Spirit. Billy Graham discusses the 9 gifts and 9 fruits of the Holy Spirit. He also craftily shows readers how the Holy Spirit lead sinners to the Lord and to eternal salvation. This book contains teachings on who is the Holy Spirit and how He lead us to a deeper and closer relationship with the Lord. I believe this book to be one of the best teaching books on the Holy Spirit and the personal ministry that He has with each one of us as we journey through this life.

T. D. Jakes - “Maximizing the Moment: God’s Action Plan for Your Life”

T.D. Jakes is without question one of the greatest teachers and pastors we have in the body to-date. To those of you who have seen him preach and teach on his regular TV show, he is one of the most anointed speakers in the area of motivating the saints to become everything that God is calling them to become in Him in this life. This man is one of the most intense and on-fire teachers you will ever see.

The readers are taught how to do their best in whatever field God is calling them to do in their life. He covers how to get released from your hurtful past and how to face and overcome obstacles. He talks about overcoming roadblocks that you could face when you submits your life to God and walk in the path He has set for you.

Are You a Teen Book Reader? Here are 8 You Shouldn’t Miss!

Reading is more than a pass time for me; it’s an obsession! I love it. And while I in no way limit myself to teen books (otherwise known as young adult literature or YA books) I definitely have a special place in my house that’s overflowing with them! The people involved in producing all the great YA options just seem to be putting out exactly what I like! So there’s no way I’m going to ignore it just because I’m not a teenager. Why should I?

And having established my claim as an obsessive reader that loves YA books in particular, I thought I might as well share my positive experiences. Here are 8 books I’ve stumbled upon or been pushed toward (it doesn’t matter in the end) that I read over and over and recommend to others over and over. If you’ve never heard of any of them…where have you been and you should read more! If you’ve heard of a few…check some of the others out. You might like them, too. If you love reading, but you’ve never ventured into YA literature, here’s a good chance to give a few good books a shot!

1. Jeanne DePrau’s The City of Ember and its sequel The People of Sparks were so disturbingly spot on that I found myself forgetting that they were set in the future and could therefore not actually BE true; at least not yet. They left me with a new perspective on some of my daily habits and personal philosophies which I always find very satisfying. I like seeing me from a new perspective due to something I read in the pages of a book. You might want to read the book before the movie based on The City of Ember comes out this Fall, as well!

2. The most recent Advance Review Copy I’ve received and actually enjoyed was Hot Girl by Dream Jordan. It presented the foster care system in a way that gave me a better glimpse of something I’ve never experienced first-hand. As such I can’t be the best judge of the realism used to portray the issues relating to foster care, but it left me more aware of the elements that can be involved and that most likely are involved in many cases. In addition it offered one of the most touching philosophies on friendship that I’ve run across in a new novel for a long time. I really enjoyed watching the growth the characters achieved (and sometimes endured).

3. Korman’s Son of the Mob is one of my “laugh out loud” books. And those are my favorites. It has a lot of dark humor, some romance, some action, some intrigue, and let’s not forget…the MOB! It’s just the perfect combination of the hilarious and the serious and the mundane.

4. City of Bones by Cassandra Clare is Book One in her Mortal Instruments Series. I admit I was snagged from page one. I loved the characters which is really the easiest way to snare me when it comes to a new series. The third book is due to be released in Fall 2008 (pretty soon…) and I’m looking forward to more story. There are so many twists and turns that I’m surprised they can get even a smidgen of the good stuff portrayed in the short cover copy. But it was obviously enough to get me interested enough to make the purchase. And I never regretted that one.

5. Shannon Hale’s Goose Girl is a retelling of the traditional fairy tale. I tend to like fairy tale retellings, but I can honestly say out of all the fairy tale retellings I’ve read, Goose Girl is my favorite. It was just so lilting and sweet while being passionate and strong at the same time. I enjoyed the style of the writing, the characters, the setting, and the story. It all moved together perfectly from beginning to end. The sequel Enna Burning may have been even a smidgen better and I wouldn’t allow anyone I liked to miss the third in the series, River Secrets, either.

6. Is Kissing a Girl Who Smokes Like Licking an Ashtray? By Randy Powell. This is a book that I picked up for the title alone. Sometimes that works for me; sometimes it doesn’t. This one actually turned out to be very interesting and I’ve enjoyed it more than once (I’m a re-reader). It’s funny. It’s fresh. It’s ironic. It’s just plain good.

7. I’ve got a confession to make before I name the next book. There are a few special individuals out there who happened to ask me for book recommendations shortly after I stumbled across the blog of Beth Kephart. I was so impressed with the smooth quality of her writing that seemed to say so much without disrupting the rhythm of the writing that I recommended her book, House of Dance, without having read it first! But even though that recommendation wasn’t based on personal experience, I did no harm and you can all still trust me to give you good book recommendations! All is still well in the world.

8. Sarah Dessen’s This Lullaby is an all time favorite of mine. I loved the main character Remy, as well as her wild array of friends, non-friends and family. I loved her metamorphosis throughout the book and the changes she wrought on the people around her.

And that is one great list of 8 teen books that you can really sit back and enjoy. So if you find one you haven’t yet tried…now’s a good time. Try it!
